1. Stay at the Scene (but safely get off the road if possible)

After an accident, if you are able to move off the road, it is important to do so. You can avoid causing another accident.

2. Call the Police

Contact local law enforcement agencies and medical professionals as soon as you are able to do so. Never refuse treatment from an EMT, even if you don't think you are injured because you could be in shock.

3. Exchange Information

Gather valuable information such as the insurance provider, driver's license number, name, license plate, make, model, and year of the vehicle, and time and location.

4. Talk to Witnesses and Gather Evidence

If you were near an intersection with pedestrians, or if there were people who pulled over to help, gather their names and contact information as well. This can help if a claim needs to be filed and liability is disputed.

5. Talk to an Attorney

It is important that you contact an attorney as soon as possible after all reports have been filed, all witness statements collected, and it is determined that everyone is alright.
